Gary Lucas performs Evening Bell

Gary Lucas performs Don Van Vliet's, (aka Captain Beefheart), fiendishly difficult solo composition "Evening Bell" in concert with The Magic Band.
The piece, which was composed by Don on piano, took Gary Lucas many months to transcribe & master, & was originally recorded by Gary for the last Captain Beefheart album "Ice Cream For Crow" (Virgin 1982).

1974 Upon the My-Oh-My (Dutch TV)

Dutch TV show "Van Oekel's Discohoek", 1974.
Captain Beefheart lip sync to "Upon the my-oh-my"

Upon the My-O-My
The decks were stacked
The wind blew low, the wind blew high
The stakes were low, the stakes were high
Upon the My-O-My
Hands low, hands high,
Ho-ho-ho, hi-hi-hi
Hands low, hands high
Upon the My-O-My

How was I to know she was so shy?
Upon the My-O-My
Across the light, across the night
You can hear the Captain's cry
Hands low, hands high
Upon the My-O-My
Got to make her roll, got to make her fly
Upon the My-O-My

Now tell me, good Captain,
How does it feel
To be driven away from your own steering wheel
Upon the My-O-My . . .

Best Batch Yet
We don't have to suffer
We're the best batch yet
Baked 'n' special
White flesh weighs to black
You might think
This is the finest pearl
But it's only cardboard balls seamed in glue
Overwhelming technique
Done thru diligence
It's all happening from the inside you say
Done from the inside
Why it barely shows on the outside
It's remarkable
I think this is
The best batch yet

Safe As Milk
Well my cigarette died when I washed my face
Dropped some drops in an ashtray hit a wrong place
Woman at my blinds to see spiders spinning lines
Its a safe as milk it's a safe as milk
I never heard it put quite that way
The shape I'm in is a gone a way
They called a day they called a day
yesterday's paper headlines approach rain gutter teasing rusty cat sneezing
Soppin wet hammer dusty and wheezing
Lusty alley whining trashcan blues
Children running after rainbows stocking poor
Gracious ladies nylon hanging on to line
Jumping onto leg looking mighty fine

Sorrows lollipop lands stick-broken on a dark carnival ground
Pop up toaster cracklin Aluminium rhythm and sound
Ev'ry day pencil lazy and sharp
The icebox inside looking like a harp
E-lectric bulb been out for years Freezer fumes feed the gas tears
Cheese in the corner with a mile long beard
Beggin' blue bread dog eared (repeat twice)

I may be hungry but I sure ain't weird

1982 Ice Cream For Crow (Music video)

Video from 1982 directed by Daniel Perle.

Ice Cream for Crow
It's so hot
looks like you have three beaks crow
the moon's so full
white hat on a pumpkin
you know there's something
the moon was a stone's throw
stop the show
I need to say hello
to the crow
light the fire piano
the moon showed up
and it started to show
tonight there'd be ice cream
ice cream for crow
ice cream for crow
sun cream by day
ice cream for crow
ice cream by night
ice cream by day
the sun ain't stable
ice cream for crow
crow pants the scarecrow
crow dance ah ho ho
crow dance ah panther
scare crow you answer
you can hee and haw
laugh and scratch
ha ha ha
ha ha ha
boss and toss
don't shake my hand
give me your claw
two tears in a haystack
scarecrow get back
tonight there's gonna be
a feather treatment
beneath the symbol
we'll all assemble
oh how we'll fly
oh how we'll tremble
cut the cake
we'll all get well
turn up the speakers
hop flop squawk
it's a keeper
ice cream for show
ice cream for crow
now now that's it
now you can go

Rockette Morton (Mark Boston) - guitar
Winged Eel Fingerling (Elliot Ingber) - guitar

When Big Joan Sets Up
Hoy hoy
When Big Joan comes out
Her arms are too small
Her head like uh ball
She tied off her horse
'n galloped off into the moonbeams
She pulled up her blouse
'n compared her navel to the moon
I dig my life for uh while
When Big Joan sets up
Her hands are too small
She's too fat t' go out in the daylight
So she rolls around all night
I'm just sorta thread
With uh drooped body
I'll set up with yuh Big Joan
I'm too fat t' go out
In the daylight
I'll stay up all night
I won't droop if you
Won't talk about your
Hands bein' too small
You know something's happenin'
Or you wouldn't of come out like yuh did
She ain't built for goin' naked
So she can't wear any new clothes
Or go t' the beach
They laugh at her body
Cause her hands are too small
When Big Joan sets up her hands are too smal
l She's outta reach
Uh turquoise scarf 'n uh sleeve
Rolled up over uh Merc Montclair
I'll sit up with yuh Big Joan
I'm too fat to go out in the daytime
I'll stay up all night
If yuh promise not t' talk
About yer hands bein' too small
Hoy hoy is she uh boy?

High voltage man kisses night to bring the light to those who need to hide their shadow deed
Go into bright find the light and know that friends don't mind just how you grow

midnight cowboy stains in black reads dark roads without a map
To free-seeking electricity (repeat) (Repeat both lines)

More info here

She's Too Much For My Mirror
Spoken: "Here you would have a famous version of 'She's Too Much For My Mirror'. Note the clever slight. 'She's Too Much For My, Or Anybody's, Mirror, number 2'. Told ya."

She's too much for my mirror
She almost make me lose it
The way she abuse it make me never wanna use it
Well mend yer heart 'n mind yer soul

Ole Chicago she's uh woman thata
Make uh young man uh bum
She howl like the wind
Make m' heart grow cold
Make me long for that little red fum!

She makes things fly 'n she makes things roll
She got me way over here 'n I'm hungry 'n cold
I remember m' mother told me I oughta be choosey
That was way back when I thought she was m' friend
Now I find out she's uh floosey

I remember the butterflies 'n the sweet smell uh corn
'n the bubblin' fish in that lil' pond
Oooh, Lousey! Oooh, Lousey!
How I long for you
How I long for you
She's too much for my mirror
That little floosey oh how I fear her
Oooh, Lousey!

Spoken: "Shit I don't know how I'm gonna get that in there."

My Human Gets Me Blues
I saw yuh baby dancin' in your x-ray gingham dress
I knew you were under duress
I knew you were under yer dress
Just keep comin' Jesus
Your the best dressed
You look dandy in the sky but you don't scare me
Cause I got you here in my eye
In this lifetime you got m'humangetsmeblues
With yer jaw hangin' slack n' yer hair's curlin'
Like an ole navy fork stickin' in the sunset
The way you were dancin' I knew you'd never come back
You were strainin' t' keep yer
Old black cracked patent shoes
In this lifetime you got m'humangetsmeblues
Well the way you'd been ole lady
I could see the fear in yer windows
Under yer furry crawlin' brow
Uh silver bow rings up in inches
You were afraid you'd be the devils red wife
But it's alright God dug yer dance
'n would have you young 'n in his harum
Dress you the way he wants cause he never had uh doll
Cause everybody made him uh boy
'n God didn't think t' ask his preference
You can bring yer dress 'n yer favorite dog
'n yer husbands cane
'n yer old spotted dog
Cause in this lifetime
You've got m'humangetsmeblues
